With all the disruptions of this year, it’s impossible to predict what Halloween in 2020 will look like; if it will look like much of anything at all. Since it’s my favorite holiday, I wanted to be sure to brainstorm some ways to celebrate that can be implemented around the social distance regulations.

The first idea is a great way to reconnect friendships that have been strained by forced time apart. Following the popular trend of “Halloween baskets,” I decided to send Halloween packages to a friend– filling the package with her favorite snacks, candy and cute Halloween goodies. Especially now, it’s super exciting to receive a package in the mail and one from a missed friend is the best surprise of all. It’s also a great way to support the USPS.

My next idea is to host a Halloween movie marathon on zoom– even though we can’t be together, the internet can be used to help create the experience of jumping in fright and laughing in amusement with friends and family. It’s a perfect opportunity to make a themed cocktail and make up a drinking game to go along with the feature film.

Another opportunity to celebrate while social distancing is a drive through haunted attraction. Last week I attended Del Mar’s Scream Zone with my family. We drove through the elaborate sets as actors jumped out, chased our car, and extended their plastic weaponry through our agape windows. It was a great way to have a real Halloween experience, outside of the house!
Donnie Darko will definitely be on rotation this month and hopefully it cools off enough here in San Diego to actually wear my orange sweater and Doc Martens. Although it’s underwhelming to not be allowed the usual festivities, it’s still possible to have a great Halloween, from the comfort of one’s own home. I hope you all find your own ways to celebrate too!

I LOVE this!!! Very innovative. A good reminder that we all have choices in changing our own moods and perspectives instead of waiting for “something” else to change them for us. So inspirational, Caitlin, on many different levels. Thanks!!
